Making Coaching-Based Leadership a Priority
Are any or all of these perennial refrains in your organization?
- “Our people aren’t engaged, they don’t seem to care.”
- “No one takes initiative around here to make things happen.”
- “We don’t talk about the things we really need to.”
- “Our people don’t get the feedback they need to grow.”
- “People don’t collaborate. They don’t reach out beyond who they know.”
- “We’re not innovating fast enough. Our people don’t think outside the box.”
Take a proverbial step back with me and look at these “issues.” Do you see the common thread running through these persistent patterns? When you follow the thread to the root causes of each of these patterns, it’s likely you’ll find that:
People avoid having honest, productive conversations about critical issues because those issues are wrapped in emotions.
In fact, it’s the things that matter the most to people – and to your organization – that tend to have the greatest emotional charge. So those are the conversations that people tend to avoid the most, much to the detriment of all concerned.
If any of this sounds familiar then instilling coaching-based leadership in your organization as the predominant leadership style should be at the very top of your priority list. Because coaching-based leadership:
- Gives people the perspective and tools needed to step into emotionally charged situations and have productive dialogues that get to the heart of what’s stuck and create positive forward momentum.
- Turns day-to-day conversations with anyone, anywhere, at any time, into opportunities to help others learn, grow and embrace new perspectives.
- Teaches people how to connect with others in ways that matter to them, which creates engagement.
- Builds trusting, productive relationships where they currently don’t exist.
- Gets things done and makes change happen in the most effective and efficient way possible.
Make it your new year’s resolution to break the pattern of avoidance in your organization and give people the perspective and tools they need to confidently and appreciatively find new ways to address old sticky issues.
